DPC Websites

How to explain direct primary care so patients actually get it.

By Kaitlin Vachon · 6 min read

Most people visiting your website have never heard of direct primary care. If they can’t understand it in a few seconds, they won’t stick around long enough to love it.

I’ve worked inside a DPC practice since 2019, and the number one question we hear is some version of “Wait, so how does this work?” Your website should answer that before anyone has to ask. Here’s how.

Ditch the insider language

After a while in DPC, words like “membership model” and “panel size” feel normal. To a new patient, they sound like a timeshare pitch. Tap each card to see what patients actually need to hear.

We say Direct primary care Tap to translate
Patients hear Your own doctor, for one monthly membership.
We say Membership fee Tap to translate
Patients hear One simple monthly price, like a gym membership for your health.
We say No copays Tap to translate
Patients hear You never pay at the visit. It’s already covered.
We say Wholesale labs & meds Tap to translate
Patients hear Lab work and prescriptions at a fraction of the usual price.
We say Unrestricted access Tap to translate
Patients hear Text, call, or visit your doctor when you need them.
We say Panel size Tap to translate
Patients hear Your doctor sees fewer patients, so you get more time.

Explain it in one sentence on your homepage

Your homepage headline should explain DPC to someone who has never heard of it. Toggle to compare:

Welcome to Sunrise Direct Primary Care
Membership-based, patient-centered, concierge-style healthcare.
A visitor still doesn’t know what they get, what it costs, or why it’s different.
Your own doctor, unlimited visits, one simple monthly price.
No copays. Same-day appointments. Text your doctor when you need them.
In five seconds, they know what it is, why it’s better, and that it’s affordable.

If they have to ask, your website hasn’t told them.

Compare it to something they already know

New ideas click faster when they connect to something familiar. A simple comparison does more than a paragraph of explanation:

“Think of it like a gym membership for your health. One monthly price, and you can use it as much as you need.”

Netflix, Amazon Prime, and a family doctor “like the old days” all work too. Pick the one that sounds most like your practice.

Show how it works in three steps

A simple visual beats a long explanation every time:

Pick your membership → Meet your doctor → Text, call, or visit anytime
Try this: Put these three steps right under your homepage headline, before anything else.

Answer the “but what about…” questions

Every confused visitor has the same handful of questions. Answer them on your site and you’ll get fewer phone calls and more sign-ups. Tap each one:

Sample answer Yes, and here’s why: your membership covers everyday care with your doctor. We still recommend insurance for emergencies, hospital stays, and specialists. Many members pair DPC with a high-deductible plan to save money.

Sample answer Your doctor still refers you, and often helps you get seen faster. Because they know you well, they can send the right information and help you find a specialist who fits your budget.

How to answer it Answer honestly for your practice and state, and link to your source. Patients ask this a lot, and a clear answer here saves you dozens of phone calls.

How to answer it Spell out exactly how members reach you: text, call, or app, and what response time to expect. Specific answers build more trust than “24/7 access.”

How to answer it Say it plainly: how to cancel, any notice period, and whether there’s an enrollment fee. Clear exit terms make people more comfortable joining.

Make the price make sense

Don’t just list a monthly fee. Show what’s included, so the price feels like a deal instead of an extra bill.

1 Show the monthly price up front, with tiers for kids, adults, and families.
2 List what’s included in plain words: visits, texting, labs, and discounts.
3 Add one sentence on how it works alongside insurance.
